Introducing St Martin's Island
Idyllic St Martin’s Island is the whole thing that brash Cox’s Bazar is not. It’s the country’s only coral island, and home to a friendly, tomorrow-never-comes population of around 7000. The majority of the island’s inhabitants are Muslim, and live primarily off fishing.
St Martin’s Island is a extraordinary place with beaches that really do match the publicity, but whether it will remain as such is a big question. Entrepreneurs are more and more becoming aware of the island’s economic potential, though unfortunately not its environmental and cultural weakness. For the moment though it remains a place more for the discerning Bangladeshi tourist and therefore most foreign guests find it a far more relaxing beach hang-out than its big brother up the coast.
